Overview
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, irreversible brain disorder with no known cure. Symptoms of the disease include memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, personality changes, and disorientation. As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, anxiety, agitation, and hallucinations may be present. Once diagnosed, a person with Alzheimer’s disease may live anywhere from three to 20 years. Eventually, if the individual with the disease has no other serious illness, the loss of brain function itself is fatal. Some treatments exist to help slow down the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Please see our Treatment section or contact your health care professional for more information. Alzheimer’s disease is named after Dr.Alois Alzheimer who, in 1906, described changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of what was thought at the time to be an unusual mental illness. |
