DEPRESSION

Overview

Depression is a serious disorder that directly impacts a person’s ability to function in daily life. Unlike short-term sadness or grief, depression is marked by a combination of symptoms that may interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once-pleasurable activities.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 18.8 million Americans over the age of 18 suffer from major depression. Suicide, closely linked to depression, is the third leading cause of death in 10- to 24-year-olds.

People suffering from depression should contact their primary care doctor or a psychiatrist immediately. Depression is an illness and needs treatment.
